UpnUpMovement Successfully Advocates for the Restoration of Bus Service in Dixon Circle
I would like to express my deepest appreciation to every individual who contributed to our campaign, whether through signatures, participation in events, or amplifying our message. This victory belongs to the community and showcases the positive change that can be achieved when we unite for a common purpose. I would also like to thank DART for hearing the concerns of the people of Dixon Circle and allowing UpnUpmovenment to make a case for the return of the Bus Service.
Background: The bus service in Dixon Circle was removed in January 2022, with DART citing a decline in rider share. However, residents accused DART of plugging up the money inserter. DART introduced GoLink as an alternative, but the community found it insufficient.
Getting Involved in Dixon Circle:
In January 2023, we were invited by the Home Associated President to address the community’s concerns about the hardships they faced. We promised to secure the return of Bus Service #12, which served the area. Despite being a newly formed group with limited resources, we used our voices and determination to launch the campaign “Restore Dixon Circle Bus #12.”
- Gathering Testimonies: We collected testimonies from the community of their hardship.
- Social Media Sharing: We shared these testimonies on our social media platforms to raise awareness.
- Community Cookout: Organized a cookout to bring the community together.
- March from Larry Johnson Recreation Center to Transit Center: We dramatized a March to draw attention and support.
- Representation at DART Board Meetings: Michael Sneed led the way as a long-time resident and represented the community’s interests at DART (Dallas Area Rapid Transit) board meetings.
Campaign Success: After 8 months of consistently engaging DART, the DART board of Directors approved the return of the service on September 9, 2023. The bus service will resume on January 22, 2024, with route 216 serving Dixon Circle. The community celebrated this victory, acknowledging the long and tedious fight.
We have confidence that the revitalized bus service will bring significant advantages to the Dixon Circle community, and we strongly encourage DART to maintain its commitment to serving residents in the years to come. As we celebrate this significate win, our dedication to justice, equality, and community empowerment remains unwavering. We recognize that transportation serves as a lifeline for the community, and it is evident that not all transportation options are created equally, particularly in black and brown neighborhoods. Our ongoing mission is to ensure that communities of color continue to have access to this crucial lifeline.
This success also highlights the positive transformations attainable when we come together for a shared objective.
Frederick Douglass once stated. “Find out just what any people will quietly submit to, and you have found out the exact measure of injustice and wrong which will be imposed upon them. My prayer is that Dixon Circle will never again quietly submit.” – Maurice Ash, Founder and President of Unified People Unified Purpose. #StayOnTheUpnUp
